Many First Presbyterian
members are becoming aware of a new emphasis
on prayer ministry. God seems to be calling
and equipping us to make prayer an essential
and extraordinary activity as Christ’s
disciples. Our Pastors and Session agree
that a spiritual renewal of prayer and
the study thereof presently flourish in
our congregation. To support and accomplish
that which the Holy Spirit encourages
in our hearts, an oversight team serving
under the auspices of the Congregational
Care Committee is developing a prayer
ministry in the following areas:
| 1. |
A Prayer Room for intercessors
to pray for ongoing needs of our members
who have requested prayer, our staff,
and our missionaries; |
| 2. |
A team of intercessors who will
pray for every family of our congregation
at least once during the course of
a year; |
| 3. |
A regularly scheduled healing service
with trained prayer ministers who
will pray for those in need of healing;
and |
| 4. |
Neighborhood prayer groups. |

INTERCESSORY PRAYER REVISITED
By popular request, the Abiding Prayer Ministry offers “Intercessory Prayer Revisited” on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm in the Parlor beginning June 4th and continuing throughout the summer. “If God is all-powerful, why does He need us to pray? If we pray and nothing happens, does this mean that God isn’t listening? If you’ve ever felt that your prayers don’t count, Intercessory Prayer by Dutch Sheets will show you just how vital your prayers are.
This book will inspire you, give you courage to pray for the ‘impossible,’ and help you find the persistence to see your prayers to completion.” Johnny Price, a well-known, gifted teacher, is moderator for this study. We look forward to the original class members returning and to new members joining us. If you do not own this book, call Tammy Burkhalter at 672-0327 so that the correct number will be available when the class begins.
Prayer Room
The new First Presbyterian Church Prayer Room (Room 310 in the McKoy Education Building) was dedicated on Tuesday, January 10, 2006. Prayer requests are directed to the Prayer Ministry Team in this location and confidentiality is maintained. Prayer cards are sent to those requesting prayer. The Prayer Room is open for the congregation to use at certain times on Sunday and during the week. Check the weekly GrapeVine newsletter for open times. Please be assured that individual prayer requests are locked and secure at all times and that confidentiality will be guarded on open dates. We invite you to visit the room during these times or to use it for a personal prayer time. You may hang the IN USE sign on the door if you desire a private time in the Prayer Room. Please sign our Guest List and leave your comments.
Prayer Request Team
A Prayer Request Team was formed in January 2006 to begin a ministry of intercession for our church (Pastors, support staff, Session and Diaconate, committees, activities, and ministries.) We also pray for our military and the missionaries that are supported by FPC. Each team member spends at least one hour per week in the Prayer Room.
The Team is asking the Lord to provide intercessors from our congregation for at least 40 hours a week. As of April, 10 hours of intercessory prayers are being offered each week for our church. One of our missions is that everyone who has requested prayer will be lifted up many times during the week.
All prayer requests are confidential. There are prayer request forms at the Reception Desk and in the literature racks for those who would like to request prayer for themselves or someone else. Forms are also provided soon in the pew racks. Prayer needs are not be published in the bulletin unless requested. If you sense that God is calling you to intercessory prayer, please contact the Congregational Care Office to see how you can be a part of this Prayer Team. Training for intercessors is offered monthly.
If you are not ready to commit to intercessory prayer in this manner, we encourage you to join us in prayer for our church using the Chapel, the Light Court, or the Sanctuary, places that are dedicated to prayer, or in your own home at any time of your choice.
Prayer Card Team
A Prayer Card Team was formed at the same time to intercede for every family in our congregation for one week during the year. A card is sent to notify you prior to the week that this team prays for your family. They have no specific knowledge of need or requests but will be praying for blessing and guidance for your family for that entire week.
If you sense a call to prayer and would like to pray for the families of our congregation in the privacy of your own home, please call the Congregational Care Office to see how you can be a part of this team (672-0327).

Healing Prayer Ministry
As was His custom, Jesus stood in the synagogue and read from the prophet Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18-19) Jesus declared that He fulfilled that prophecy. He came as our Healer Redeemer. There are forty-nine incidents of physical and emotional healing in the four gospels. Jesus commissioned and empowered His disciples and the church to continue His healing ministry.
Believing we have a need for forgiveness, physical healing, and inner healing, a time for concentrated healing prayer is being offered to our congregation, their families, and their friends on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in Harper Chapel. Prayer Ministers who feel called into this ministry, who understand the necessity of confidentiality, who are engaged in a disciplined prayer life, and who have participated in the required training will lovingly intercede on your behalf. In response to the scripture, anointing with oil and laying on of hands will be available upon request. The desire of the Healing Prayer Ministry is that we may all be made whole through the power of the Holy Spirit and know the joy of abundant life our Savior promised.
Healing Prayer will be offered on the First Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in Harper Chapel.
