The Promise Keeper wives are sponsoring a marriage enrichment event for women on Thursday, August 14th, at 7:00pm in the Parlor. Dr. Pam Cole will speak on “The Secret of Contentment.” Call Priss Jones at 234-1001 for
details and reservations.

We've been busy so far this year!

We held a large mini “I Promise” Conference in conjunction with the annual Church Valentine Banquet (weekend of February 8th & 9th); Ted Cunningham from the Smalley Relations Center was the speaker. Over 500 individuals attended the conference; 540 attended the dinner. The leadership team consisted of over 120 persons.

We offered four classes during the Winter 2008 Wednesday night Advantage:
1. Every Man’s Marriage
2. Every Women’s Marriage
3. God is Not Going to Ask Whether or Not Your Children Like You!
4. Winning at Work and At Home (a Men’s Fraternity video)

In March the Pre-Marriage Sub Committee trained several couples to be mentors to couples getting married at First Presbyterian Church, using the materials of Drs. Leslie Parrott.

We have formed several sub-committees:
a. Spiritual Legacy Committee: Esther & Bob Burroughs, chairpersons
b. Issues Committee: Will & Melody Reid, chairpersons
c. Marriage Enrichment Committee: Bob & Nancy Renn, chairpersons
d. Parenting Committee: Ken Chapman, chairperson
e. Pre-Marriage Committee – Leslie Wofford, Chairperson
f. Blended Family Committee – Beth and Charles Duke, Chairpersons
g. Empty Nest Committee – Tom & Brenda Preston, Chairpersons

In February or March the Committee will seek permission from the Session of the Church to allow the Ministry to be a ‘stand-alone’ Committee; since last fall the committee has been a sub-committee of the Christian Education Committee and before that a sub-committee of the Congregational Care Committee of the Session.

The Spiritual Legacy Committee has made magnets for refrigerators and bumper stickers with these words, “God’s Family. Our Family. GOD’S WAY. First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC.” Each is available in the Marriage and Family Ministry office.

On April 6th a guest speaker addressed a joint meeting of the Sunday School Classes, in the chapel, on the subject of “The Internet & Our Families”.

The Common Thread Men’s Ministry, which is part of the Marriage and Family Ministry just completed our seventh annual Sportsman Banquet. They also hold a bi-weekly luncheon at the Coffee Underground at 12:00 noon on Friday’s.

A hiking trip was planned for April 3rd and 4th under the leadership of Brian Young.

Promise Keepers wil make their 11th trip this summer to Atlanta in August taking two busses.

The Marriage and Family Ministry also oversees weddings and provides pastoral oversight for pre-marriage counseling (Prepare & Enrich Internet Inventory).

Thought for the Week

In The Marriage Book, authors Nicky and Sila Lee write these simple (but not always so easy to apply) words:

“Relationships grow when we make an effort… A great secret in marriage is to ask questions about the day, about each other’s activities, concerns, interests, worries, hopes, and plans. We can discover one another’s opinions on everyday matters as well as how we view issues of wider significance.”

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
RESOURCES

From time to time, the Marriage and Family Ministry at First Presbyterian Church will share information on the latest in resources that are available to enhance your marriage and home.

Perhaps the hottest book currently being read by people wanting to grow their marriages is Love and Respect, by Emerson Eggerichs. It talks about the need of the husband to love his wife and the wife to respect her husband.

Dr. Gary Smalley also has two new books worth reading: I Promise,
which discusses the five promises
that create security, and The DNA
of Relationships,
which offers an analysis of the “dance that creates conflict in relationships and the five dance steps which offer
revolutionary relationships.”
